When you’re a mom on the move, your diaper bag isn’t just a bag, it’s your survival kit. Mine goes everywhere with me, and I love the peace of mind knowing everything I need is always within arm’s reach. But with so many baby products out there, it’s hard to know what’s actually worth carrying… and what’s just going to live at the bottom of your bag forever.
It took a few adventures (and some blowouts) to figure out which items truly deserve a permanent spot in my bag. From quick errands to cross-town adventures, these diaper bag essentials make outings with my little one so much easier.
Picking the Right Bag
The best diaper bag is the one you’ll actually want to carry. For me, that’s a backpack-style bag with washable fabric, thick padded straps, and enough compartments that I don’t have to dump the whole thing just to find a pacifier.
I love the Lululemon New Parent Backpack. It fits in both my everyday stroller and my travel stroller (though it’s a little snug in the travel one). The padded straps make it comfortable for long walks or schlepping groceries home when the stroller basket is overflowing. It also has just the right number of compartments, and the top pouch is perfect for quick-grab items like my wallet, keys, and lip balm.
Road-Tested Diaper Bag Must-Haves
Changing Time, Anywhere
No diaper bag is complete without the diapering basics:
- Diapers: I always keep four in my bag, plus extras if we’ll be out longer (a good rule of thumb is one diaper per hour away). My go-to brand is Coterie. Yes, they’re pricey, but they’re the softest, most absorbent, and most reliable diapers I’ve used (and I’ve tried them all).
- Wipes: I keep mine in a portable wipes container that keeps them from drying out (so much better than relying on the sticky flap that stops sticking after a couple uses; just remember to snap it shut every time).
- Changing pads: My diaper bag came with a reusable one, but I also stash disposable changing pads for public restrooms or “code red” situations.
- Disposable diaper bags: A bag dispenser makes it easy to grab one-handed while wrangling a wiggly baby mid-change.
- Diaper cream: Always good to keep on hand, because a happy bottom = a happy baby (and happier mom!).
Feeding on the Go
Having the right tools makes eating out so much easier. I always keep:
- Placemats: A silicone roll-up placemat wipes down easily and doesn’t slip around. I also carry a few disposable placemats that stick to tables (avoiding wood or other surfaces where the adhesive could cause damage).
- Baby utensils: A little fork and spoon set that comes with its own case makes it easy to find in my bag and keeps everything else in my bag clean after a messy meal.
- Bib: A roll-up silicone bib is perfect for easy clean-ups and compact storage.
Quick-Grab Essentials
These live in my front or side pocket for easy access:
- Hand sanitizer
- Tissues
- Nose picker
- Sunscreen: I’ve tried lots of baby mineral sunscreens, and Thinkbaby is my favorite (least residue by far!). A Sunscreen Stick also makes face application so much easier.
- Pacifier + pacifier clip
- Water bottles (one for me, one for baby)
- Instant stain remover wipes: non-negotiable (clumsiness is generational). I can’t tell you how many outfits they’ve saved on the go!
Everything Else
These are the “just in case” items that stay in my bag full-time (because if I take them out, I always regret it):
- Nursing cover: lightweight and perfect for discreet breastfeeding or pumping, and in a pinch, it doubles as a blanket or stroller cover.
- Wipes for everything: I have different go-to’s for sticky hands, messy faces, dropped pacifiers, and wiping down surfaces.
- Extra outfit: Murphy’s law means the one time you don’t pack one, disaster will strike.
- Fun stuff: Indestructibles books are my go-to for on-the-go play. They’re lightweight, crinkly, and endlessly entertaining. Soft clip-on books are also great.
- Burp cloths
- Plastic bags
Bonus: Grab-and Go Bag
My diaper bag came with a mini crossbody and it’s the perfect grab-and-go bag. Ideal for walks or baby wearing when I only need the basics: a couple of diapers, wipes, a disposable diaper bag, a disposable changing pad, and hand sanitizer. Small but mighty!
Pro Tip
Always repack your bag as soon as you get home. It takes two minutes and has saved me countless times when I’m rushing out the door. Build a diaper bag that works with you, not against you (your future self will thank you!).
